Domains

A well-planned domain structure is essential, because it brings clarity, organization, and consistency to the University’s vast digital presence. With so many schools, departments, and units, a unified structure ensures that our websites are easy to navigate and clearly tied to the institution, reinforcing brand recognition and trust. It also strengthens search engine optimization by consolidating authority under the university’s main domain, making important content easier to find. Beyond visibility, a consistent structure supports security and governance, allowing IT teams to monitor, protect, and manage sites effectively while reducing risks from unapproved or misleading domains. Just as importantly, it provides scalability for future growth, enabling new programs or initiatives to be added seamlessly. Together, these factors create a professional, trustworthy online identity that enhances the user experience for students, faculty, and external audiences alike.

General Domain Standards

  1. All University units (e.g. schools, departments, programs, labs, etc.) must use a uconn.edu domain for their websites.
  2. Top-level domains (e.g. xyz.uconn.edu) are reserved for schools/colleges, regional campuses, and top-level offices like the Office of the Provost and Undergraduate Admissions. Some academic departments are also assigned top-level domains. Please review the list below for additional information.
  3. Departments, programs, initiatives, etc. are assigned a subdomain of their parent unit’s domain.
  4. Domain names must be directly tied to the name of the UConn entity they are created for. For instance, University Communications’ domain is https://universitycommunications.uconn.edu/.
  5. Acronyms and abbreviations are not allowed in domain names. Read more about this standard.
